What is the advantage of having the Gastric Bypass done laparoscopically
When performed laparoscopically, the entire Gastric Bypass surgery is done using 5 small puncture wounds, as opposed to the open procedure where patients are left with an 8-10 inch scar. Additionally, patients having the surgery done laparoscopically report less pain, return to work quickly, and have a shorter hospital stay compared to those having the open procedure. When the surgery is done laparoscopically the rate of postoperative hernias are 0%. With the open procedure, postoperative rates of hernia development are as high as 40%.
